STANDARD OF CONDUCT FOR COACHES


*All Coaches Must Distribute This To All Players, Parents and Families


Standard of Conduct: A registered Coach shall demonstrate good Sportsmanship in all aspects of Dunk Basketball Youth Association (DBYA) Competitive Play.

Each registered Coach shall:
A. Teach basketball, and in the process, recognize that only professionals have to win.
B. Teach sportsmanship and fair play.
C. Show respect and courtesy to referees at all times and recognize that referees are the final authority in DBYA Competitive Play.
D. Show respect and courtesy to all other coaches, players and spectators.
E. CONTROL THE PARENTS OF HIS/ HER PLAYERS. THE COACH IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CONDUCT OF
THE PARENTS OF HIS PLAYERS AND OF THE SPECTATORS SUPPORTING HIS TEAM.
F. Teach his players that honest efforts is as important as victory so that the results of competitive play are accepted without undue disappointment.
G. Conduct himself in a manner that allows his players to retain their dignity.
H. Actively support and promote all efforts to eliminate referee abuse and all forms of player/spectator misconduct from DBYA  Competitive Play.

Player Discipline: It is expected that a Registered Coach may, from time to time, discipline a player in the course of DBYA play.
Each coach shall adhere to the coach's standard of conduct in connection with any disciplinary action involving a player. In addition,each coach will discuss the disciplinary action taken with the family of the player involved.

Misconduct: An objective of DBYA Competitive Play is to teach Sportsmanship. CONSEQUENTLY, NEITHER REFEREE ABUSE NOR MISCONDUCT BY PLAYERS, COACHES AND SPECTATORS WILL BE TOLERATED IN DBYA COMPETITIVE PLAY. Referee Abuse and player/coach/spectator misconduct shall be enforced by the Infractions Committee either acting on its own motion or upon the filing of a written complaint by any interested party.

STANDARD OF CONDUCT FOR PLAYERS
Each player shall demonstrate good Sportsmanship in all aspects of DBYA Competitive Play.
A. Each player shall treat his/her coaches, teammates and opposing players with respect.
B. Each player shall recognize that opponents are necessary friends. Without them, there could be no competitive play.
C. Each player shall applaud good plays by his/her teammates and by opposing players.
D. No player shall openly question a referee's judgment or honesty. Referees are symbols of fair play, integrity and sportsmanship.
E. Each player shall accept the results of each game, being gracious in victory and turning defeat into a positive experience by working toward improvement.

STANDARD OF CONDUCT FOR PARENTS AND FAMILIES OF PLAYERS
It is paramount that the parents and the family of each player bear in mind that the player is involved in DBYA Competitive Play for the enjoyment of the player, NOT FOR THE ENJOYMENT OF THE PARENTS AND FAMILIES. Consequently, parents and families of players are expected to demonstrate good Sportsmanship including, without limitation, courteous relations with coaches, referees and other spectators, and graceful acceptance of the results of Competitive Play. In furtherance thereof, parents and families of each player:
A. Should attempt to relieve the pressure of Competitive Play, not increase it, recognizing that a child is easily affected by outside influences.
B. Shall treat coaches with respect, recognizing that each coach is a volunteer, giving personal time and money to provide a recreational activity for their child.
C. Shall recognize that opponents are necessary friends. Without them there could be no Competitive Play.
D. Shall applaud good plays by their team and by members of the opposing team.
E. Shall not openly question a referee's judgment, honesty or integrity, and shall refrain from any misconduct constituting
Referee Abuse. Referees are symbols of fair play, integrity and Sportsmanship.
F. Shall accept the results of each game, encouraging their child to be gracious in victory and turning defeat into a positive experience by working towards improvement.
G. Shall encourage their child always to play by the rules.
H. Shall teach their child that honest effort is as important as victory so that the results of Competitive Play are accepted without undue disappointment.
I. Shall accept the results of Competitive Play and encourage their child to be gracious.

DEFINITIONS

The terms "Competitive Play", "Referee Abuse" and "Sportsmanship" used above have the following meanings:
"Competitive Play" means any basketball game involving a DBYA team where score is kept, a time clock and at least one referee are used, and a winner and loser declared.
"Referee Abuse" means abusive or derogatory conduct of any nature whatsoever directed against a referee including, but not limited to, threats, remarks that carry an implied threat of physical harm, intentional physical contact with a referee (grabbing his/her uniform, or arm, poking him/her with a finger, grabbing his/her whistle, spitting, etc.) any act of mischief or vandalism directed at the person or property of a referee, the throwing of any object at a referee and the like.
"Sportsmanship" means conduct becoming to a sportsman involving fair, honest play, courteous relations and graceful acceptance of Competitive Play.
DBYA RULES GOVERNING STANDARDS OF CONDUCT
1. Any coach, player or fan ejected from his/her team's game by the referee, gym supervisor or DBYA official must leave the gym immediately and will not be allowed into the gym for the team's next game.
2. Two ejections will result in expulsion for the remained or the tournament or league play.
3. Any coach, player or fan caught in any physical altercation or destruction of property at any time during their participation of the tournament or league will immediately be expelled from the event.
4. DBYA has 0% tolerance for drug and alcohol abuse. Anyone found in violation of this policy will be expelled from the event.

SAFEKIDS PROGRAM

The following is the policy of Dunk Basketball Youth Association:

•Dunk Basketball is committed to provide a safe environment and to prevent child abuse and
sexual misconduct.
•Dunk Basketball will make every reasonable effort to ensure that every person involved in
coaching/training a sport activity will abide by the SafeKids guidelines.
•Dunk Basketball will make every reasonable effort to exclude any DBYA member adult with a
legally documented history of child abuse/molestation, or any other record that would bring unnecessary risk to the health and safety of the participants of this organization. Therefore, every person applying for a position, as a coach/trainer must complete a Coach’s application with disclosure statement (see attached).
•Dunk Basketball will take appropriate action on all allegations of child abuse and/or sexual
misconduct. All allegations will be reported immediately to the authorities for investigation and will cooperatefully with any such investigation.
To follow is a list of preventative measures which should be taken:
•Physical, mental and verbal abuses are forbidden.
•Inappropriate touching is forbidden.
•Coaches/trainers should not socialize with the participants outside of the sponsored activities of the organization.
•Parents are encouraged to attend sponsored activities.
•If a child needs special attention (one-on-one) do it with the assistance of another adult.
